Tug [USS #3] Refurbed

Blank Welding completely restored tug USS #3 after fire.

During the summer of 2006, the tug USS # 3, which is owned by United States Steel Corporation-Clairton Works, was severely damaged by a fire caused by an electrical problem.

The boat needed to be completely restored.

Blank Welding, Elizabeth, Pa., was contracted to do the necessary repairs. The repairs included:

• complete renovation of the upper and lower engine room, galley and pilot-house;

• installation of new Caterpillar C18 engines and Cummins generators;

• fabrication and installation of larger skincoolers to handle the larger engines and generators;

• installation of new pilothouse electronic equipment;

• installation of new fire suppression system and emergency shutdowns;

• completely rewiring entire vessel;

• new rudder and bushings;

• sandblasting and repainting vessel.

On March 30, the newly renovated mv. USS # 3 was completed and was christened by United States Steel.
