The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosted a job fair April 3 in Neville Island, Pa., to recruit entry-level lock and dam operators.

"We thought it would be advantageous to recruit all at once instead of individually," Corps spokeswoman Karen Auer said.

"We found ourselves with what we consider a large number of vacancies for the same type of job, so that's why we did it this way instead of doing it the normal individual route."

Eight positions were open at eight locks.

"The job fair went extremely well. We had a large number of qualified applicants. We'll go over resumes following the normal selection process of picking top applicants interested in each job, based on résumés and how they match up and then pick top candidates for interviews," she said.

The Corps advertised a starting salary of $14.18 per hour plus health benefits and 401K.
