Brownsville Marine Products has opened a marine repair division at its facility in Brownsville, Pa.

"We're very excited. We think it gives the industry a new option, especially for people working on the Monongahela and Upper Ohio rivers for their barge repair needs and maintenance," said Tim Delaney, sales manager.

The shipyard has more than 200 employees. BMP now offers complete marine repair services for the dry cargo fleet. The company has onsite plasma cutting, a fabrication shop with plate bending capabilities up to 40 feet in length, wheelabration, blasting and painting of repair materials and a staff of marine repair craftsmen, engineers and management.

The marine way is 325 by 54 feet with a 1,000-ton capacity.

"It's a new service we're offering at the shipyard that allows us to perform topside or below water repairs. We've got the marine way operations to bring barges out of the water," Delaney said.

The company can lift jumbo hopper barges from the water with the marine way.

"Whether it's welding cracks or doing a complete re-side job, we've got all the equipment and expertise, including engineering staff who can do naval architecture and estimating for the big jobs," Delaney said.

BMP opened in the fall of 2005 as a new construction shipyard. The company is located 40 miles south of Pittsburgh at Mile 57.5 on the Monongahela River. To date, they have built about 100 barges.

Don Bewley, who was hired this year, is general manager of the yard. He has 40 years of experience, including shipyard construction, program and project development and implementation. He is serving as vice-chair of the National Shipbuilding Research Program's Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise.

The company's predecessor is Hillman Barge & Construction (HBC), which dates back to 1939. Heartland Barge Management bought HBC in November 2005 from HBC, which had been in bankruptcy since December 2004.

We have found the following additional information on BMP in their ads in The Waterways Journal. We include it here not as advertising, but as information on the rebound of commercial river traffic on the Upper Mon.
