The Everettville Historical Association received an $8,100 grant Friday to help meet the financial goal of creating a Miners Memorial Park.

The money was presented Fri-day afternoon at the mouth of the Federal Mine No. 3, where 111 miners were killed in an explosion April 30, 1927.

W.Va. delegates Mike Caputo, Linda Longstreth and Tim Manchin made the presentation.

Through the years, 149 miners died in the mine before it was shut down in 1951, said Carol Thorn, president of the Everettville Historical Association.

For the past four years, Thorn and others have worked to create the memorial park that would commemorate the deaths of many miners in the area who died on the job.

Earlier this year, CONSOL Energy signed over the deed for the 25-acre site.

The Everettville Historical Association is raising funds for the Federal No. 3 Miners Memorial and Miner's Memorial Park.
