KINGWOOD — A nine-mile section of railway along the Cheat River is being bought for rail trail usage.

Friends of the Cheat (FOC) and its Preston Rail-Trail Committee, in partnership with the West Virginia State Rail Authority, recently finalized the purchase from CSX Transportation.

The property begins just north of Greer’s Cheat River limestone quarry in Manheim and follows the Cheat River toward Kingwood.

Funding for the property acquisition came in the form of a Congressional earmark spearheaded by former U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan and secured in 2008 by late FOC Executive Director Keith Pitzer.
