Submitted to The Dominion Post U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., has been recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard for his years of work on behalf of the men and women who protect America's shores.

At a ceremony in Byrd's office this week, Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen presented Byrd with the Commodore Bertholf Award, the Coast Guard's Outstanding Legislator Award. The award honors members of Congress who support the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard and its missions through leadership on issues of importance to the Coast Guard.

"The men and women of the Coast Guard provide a critical service to the nation, safeguarding our citizens, securing our maritime borders and serving as stewards of the world's oceans," Byrd said.

"The people of West Virginia are proud to contribute to that effort at the Operations Systems Center and the National Maritime Center near Kearneysville, the Marine Safety Unit in Huntington, and the National Vessel Documentation Center in Falling Waters. I have supported the Coast Guard and its missions for many years. As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Homeland Security Subcommittee, I look forward to continuing that support."
