Public Information Meeting Concerning Water Management at Stonewall Jackson Lake

Corps of Engineers Release
11 April 2012

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Pittsburgh District invites you to a public information meeting regarding the Stonewall Jackson Lake Water Control Manual update.  This meeting will be held at the Lewis County High School, 205 Minuteman Drive, Weston, WV 26452 (http://g.co/maps/jxs7w), on Thursday, 3 May 2012 (open-house starting at 6pm, presentation starting at 7pm). Further details follow below and are also attached.

Pittsburgh District is updating and formalizing its Water Control Manual for Stonewall Jackson Lake on the West Fork River in West Virginia.  A water control manual defines the amount of water stored and released during normal operations throughout the year, as well as operations during seasonal events, such as droughts and floods, and emergencies.

While emergency operations are a critical component of any control plan, water management operations at Stonewall Jackson Lake also reduce the impact of acid mine drainage and municipal pollution by more than 50 percent along over 100 miles of the lower West Fork and upper Monongahela Rivers, providing healthier water for consumption, recreation, flora and fauna throughout the year.

This updated version of the Stonewall Jackson Lake Water Control Manual is not intended to change water management practices, but rather to assure they are comprehensive and well documented.  In publically sharing information about water management, it is the Corps intent to ensure that the project's congressionally authorized mission priorities and operations are transparent and unbiased.

If you have any questions or would like additional information regarding this meeting or the Water Control Manual Initiative, please see our public web page at: http://www.lrp.usace.army.mil/ under 'Pittsburgh District Key Projects" or contact Tom Maier at 412.395.7219 or thomas.j.maier@usace.army.mil

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting and the opportunity to further strengthen relationships with the public and other water resource stakeholders in the Stonewall Jackson Lake area.
