The former General Woodworking property in Westover now belongs to WVU.
The university purchased the 5.64-acre property Monday. According to
Monongalia County property records, it was transferred to the WVU Board
of Governors by North River Investments LLC, of Harpers Ferry.
The price was not listed on the deed, and WVU officials declined to
discuss it. North River Investments paid $1.4 million for the property
in 2006, according to property records.
The Dominion Post filed a West Virginia Freedom of Information Act
request with WVU on Friday to obtain the purchase price.
WVU spokeswoman April Johnston said a shed, house and lumber building
on the property will be demolished, and there are no plans to replace
them.
“They’re still discussing what to do or who to put in the concrete
building on the property,” Johnston said.
The old General Woodworking Co., located near the Westover Bridge,
opened in 1924 and closed in 1999. It offered building supplies,
cabinets, mill work and lumber.
