Debris collection
Group to Pick Up Trash After Planned Release
Morgantown Dominion Post
11 June 2013
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District will be
releasing a small amount of debris and drift from the Morgantown
Dam sometime today through Wednesday.
The Pittsburgh District public affairs office said the dam’s gates
need to be inspected and the release will allow access to the
gates. Bulkheads have to be set in each gate bay, and any debris
blocking the slots has to be released.
The release will happen, but the date hasn’t been determined, the
public affairs office said.
Boater Tim Terman said his volunteer group, the Mon River Revival,
plans to clean up as much as they can after the release. They have
done it after previous releases from just below the dam, along the
wharf area as far as the Westover Bridge.
Terman said that after the morning release, they generally go out
that evening for about four to five hours.
The Monongahela River Revival (MRR) will hold a benefit supper at
the Fondue Factory on Wednesday, beginning at 5 p.m., to raise
funds for cleaning litter from the river.
The MRR began in 2006 to remove litter from the river, educate the
public about the issue and encourage recreational use of the
river. The Fondue Factory is contributing 15 percent of every
check Wednesday evening to help.
