WV-DEP
Release
13 October 2010
A two-day workshop focusing on Sustainability Awareness, Pollution
Prevention and Environmental Management Systems is scheduled Dec. 14-15
at the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s
Charleston headquarters. The free event is sponsored by the WVDEP.
The first day of the workshop will focus on Sustainability Awareness
and Pollution Prevention (P2). The second day will feature
Environmental Management Systems. Each day begins at 8 a.m. and
concludes around 4:30 p.m. The workshop is designed for people who work
in schools, government, businesses and other institutions who want to
change attitudes and behavior in their organizations in an effort to
improve West Virginia’s environment, economy and communities.
“The workshop will focus on the practical applications and best
practices of sustainability concepts and principles, pollution
prevention, and environmental management to achieve viable solutions to
environmental, economic and community challenges,” said Greg Adolfson,
sustainability officer with the WVDEP.
Sustainability Awareness Training is designed to challenge individuals
to see opportunities in this new economy and to focus on goals of
efficient resource use, achieving a low carbon footprint, reducing
additions to the waste stream, improving personal health and finding
value in “community.” P2 Training provides an introduction and overview
of P2, including waste identification and source reduction; Internet
resources and computation models; and success stories. Environmental
Management System Training provides an overview of an EMS and how an
EMS can support environmental improvements at organizations that might
or might not be subject to environmental regulations and legislation.
Workshop presenters include the WVDEP’s Adolfson; Matt Earnest,
executive director of Workforce Development at Bridgemont Community and
Technical College; Jeffrey Burke, executive director of the National
Pollution Prevention Roundtable; and an environmental engineering
specialist from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc.
Workshop participants can register for either the first or second day
or both days of the workshop. The registration deadline is Monday, Dec.
