MORGANTOWN - As the summer concludes, the Upper Mon River
Association is unveiling plans in the works for next year.
UMRA President Barry Pallay said the group is working
with the Morgantown Chamber of Commerce to bring the Gateway
Clipper to Monongalia and Marion Counties.
UMRA hopes to bring the Clipper to Morgantown and Fairmont next
spring and use it to provide educational river tours and
family-friendly fun.
Pallay said this could be the next step in helping regrow
commerce on the Monongahela River.
“We’re looking next year at having the locks open for a longer
period of time, accommodating the various opportunities that
present themselves," said Pallay. "And obviously one of them
is having the Gateway Clipper here and offering that to the
community.”
UMRA took major steps toward growing river commerce this summer by
securing funding to open the locks.
This allowed for direct transportation from Morgantown to Fairmont
on the river.
