GREENSBORO - If you enjoy the great outdoors and have a hankering for
some recreational paddling, then July 30 is one of those dates you have
been waiting for.
The Greensboro Paddle on the Mon has become an annual event that has
been enjoyed by hundreds over the years.
What began in earnest as a means to better acquaint people to the
Monongahela River, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and
Nathanael Greene Historical Foundation began sponsoring these events
more than five years ago.
"The idea was very complimentary to what the Nathanael Greene
Historical Foundation was doing at the time, between the Creative
Communities Conference and the Art Blast on the Mon, and a lot of
interest was being garnered in this area," said Ralph Jannini, event
organizer.
"On a warm summer day, being on the water in a canoe or kayak is one of
the most pleasant places to be," he said.
One important facet to getting people and families interested in the
river is providing the canoes and kayaks for them to do so. The
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission provides 16 canoes, more than 12
kayaks and paddles each year.
The staff also provides introduction to water safety as well. The
foundation provides a snack and bottled water with every $5 reservation.
Once orientation is completed, paddlers start at the Glassworks Boat
Ramp and head upriver past the Old Greensboro Lock No. 7 then turn
around and head back along the Fayette County side. The more
adventurous groups can explore Georges Creek (depending upon the water
level) before heading back to the boat launch.
The paddle hours are from noon to 3 p.m., weather permitting. Whether
you are simply curious about recreational paddling, or just want to
join in with the fun, you should sign up soon as reservation fill up
each year.
Reservations can be made online at paddle.eventbrite.com or call
Jannini at 724-943 3210 for information.
